You may have heard the buzz recently around CBD and wondered how and if it could help you with a variety of ailments. First of all, what is it? CBD stands for cannabidiol, a chemical compound from the cannabis plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it is not psychoactive, meaning it will not make you sedated or altered in any way. Cannabis Sativa has two primary species, hemp, and marijuana, and both contain CBD. Hemp has a higher percentage of CBD and very low levels of THC in comparison. To make THC free CBD, the THC is extracted through the distillation process after the initial extraction. (1)

So, what’s the difference between Broad, full-spectrum, and isolate CBD? In scientific terms, isolate is the purest form of a compound. Isolate CBD is the purest form of CBD, which is produced by removing all other compounds (including terpenes, flavonoids, plant parts & other cannabinoids). Isolate CBD is typically extracted from hemp since it has a low to non-existent THC content. Full-spectrum CBD contains all the compounds removed from the isolate. Broad-spectrum CBD is a mix of full-spectrum and isolate, but the compounds are preserved while THC is completely removed. (2) CBD oil may contain small amounts of THC because it’s present in the hemp plant. CBD can have no more than 0.3 percent THC to be legal at the federal level. (3)

Many do not want a product with THC for a variety of reasons. If you’re interested in CBD without THC due to personal reasons, you can still find the same relief for your ailments without it. Because isolate CBD is more concentrated, it may be more optimal due to the higher level of CBD intake. Whatever you decide, there’s a product for you.
