The CBD craze has arrived, and this might be one trend train that you want to jump aboard! Cannabidoil(1) otherwise known as CBD, is in nearly everything now, from supplements to body care to pet treats. And now, CBD has graced the world of coffee, to many latte-lovers’ delight. In fact, of the many drinks available that contain CBD, coffee seems to be pretty high up there on the popularity list, and Zenith Global(2) has even projected that CBD infused drinks will be a $1.4 billion industry by 2023.

The draw seems to be that CBD coffee drinkers get the caffeine rush, which wakes them up and boosts productivity at home or work, without the accompanying anxiety and jitters if they accidentally overindulge. CBD is well known for its stress relieving(3) qualities, and an energy boost while being able to stay zen and focused does have a certain appeal.

Some people might worry that, because CBD is derived from hemp, it may have certain psychoactive effects, like the euphoric high that is associated marijuana. However, CBD has extremely low levels of THC, 0.3%(4) or lower, so it does not produce a euphoria. This is good news for people who want to stay focused and alert, but remain calm at the same time.

There are a couple of different ways that CBD coffee can be made. In commercial coffee shops, CBD oil is generally added to already-brewed coffee, but coffee brands can add the CBD in isolate form to the actual coffee beans as well. You should exercise some caution when consuming CBD coffee, because it is not regulated by the FDA. You will want to know exactly how many milligrams of CBD you are taking in, especially if you are consuming that coffee before driving or work.

In order to stay safe and informed, Adrian Devitt-Lee, who is the chief science writer at Project CBD(5), recommends that: “Packaging should clearly indicate total cannabinoid content and dosage, and products should always have a batch number. Avoid products with artificial colors or flavors.”

Products containing CBD are commonly used to alleviate anxiety, inflammation, and pain. Studies are ongoing, and more research is needed, but CBD has even shown promise in speeding wound healing(6) and preventing seizures(7).

About CBD in coffee specifically, Devitt-Lee added, “CBD may be able to take the edge off of caffeine on a neurological level, but it’s also possible that caffeine could undermine some beneficial effects of CBD, including its potency as an anti-epileptic.” So, more data is needed, but the anecdotal evidence appears to be overwhelmingly positive, as the popularity and usage of CBD coffee is steadily increasing.

Considering that the average daily consumption of coffee by 44%(8) of Americans is two to three cups, it would be wise to conduct a trial run at home before jumping into CBD coffee before a workday, in case it makes you drowsy. This was the effect experienced by journalist Ashlee Nolan, who wrote an article(9) about CBD coffee after trying out Green Roads Hemp Flower Coffee, which she described as tasting, “surprisingly good.”
